Learn to Change the World!
I recently received an email from Harvard University. That’s right. I received an email requesting my interest and enrollment application from THE Harvard, School of Education. My first thought was, is this a different Harvard. As I followed the web address listed, it looked legit. I followed up with one more step to ensure that the email address that it came from was also owned by Harvard. I squinted my eyes and shrugged my shoulders with a confused look on my face for a bit as I pondered why I had received this email. It turned out it was all … Continue reading Learn to Change the World!
Systems vs. Innovation
Is it systems vs innovation or is it systems and innovation? This blog post is written to reflect and, perhaps, receive feedback from the audience. I do not have the answers for this, but rather am writing to help my own thinking. I recently had a short, but great, conversation with my colleague while we were on day two of an Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports (PBIS) conference. Data Driven? Yes, please.
If someone is giving me the option of whether I want my own child’s teacher to be data driven? My answer is, yes, please. I had been a George Couros (@gcouros) groupie for the entire conference, attending all of his sessions. So, when ‘I hate the term data driven’ came out of his mouth, I was taken aback. Of course, in that setting, there was a gasp and some agreement as he explained his thinking. (His belief is that we should be focusing on the whole child more than the data.) While I agree in a big way with most of his … Continue reading Data Driven? Yes, please.
My next steps…
This is the letter I am about to send out. It includes my interest in the Doane Specialist Program (Ed.S.) program, my interest in learning about district level responsibilities, and a sliver of my leadership philosophy. I am not only interested, but very excited about, entering into the Doane Ed.S. Program. I have just completed my fifth year as Assistant Principal, I am having a great time in my current leadership role, but I am interested in learning about the bigger picture of The American Education System. The Doane program has been a part of my vision and … Continue reading My next steps…
The Communication Conundrum
Can you communicate too much? Can you communicate too little? Is it possible to communicate just right? If you stop and listen on any given day in the workplace, you will likely hear complaints on both ends of the spectrum about the same exact communication. Some don’t appreciate the format or the length or the this or the that. In some ways it is a tough and thankless job. It is a tough because even with a lot of that effort it’s not going to be everyone’s style. When it is done well or to their style they hardly notice and … Continue reading The Communication Conundrum
